Living Out of a Pack

It's been more than a decade since I lived out of a backpack for more than a week.

The experience brings back memories of prior not-quite-as-long distance backpacking trips, and echoes of my rambles through Europe and Asia with my sisters in the 1990s.

We're not quite to the AT yet—soon!—as my authorly duties have us living out of our packs in hotel rooms.

We plopped the contents out on the bed last night to shift and re-sort the shared load, ensuring we made good use of the spaces in the packs. Between us, we guess we're carrying 60 lbs of gear, food and water.

I'm sure that load will lighten as we learn what we aren't using and can toss. One more talk for me to give today at the AT Kickoff in Dahlonega and we're ready to roam!
