Salamander Streams

Salamanders are tough to spot unless you take the time to look for them

As we hopped rocks while climbing a cascading stream north of Devil's Fork Gap, John yelled out.

"Look what you missed!"

There, on the wet rocks, an equally aqueous brown salamander blending right in.

For the next hour, we amused ourselves searching for them amid the wet rocks and mud along this creek. There were many, all well camouflaged.

As John said, "I think salamander pee is the special ingredient in these mountain streams."
