Wishing you a very happy Fourth of July and hoping you're enjoying it outdoors!

The AT has brought us through a number of sites important to American history on our journey north. We're in Gettysburg, now, taking it all in, but one stop in North Carolina presented a story new to us.

This flag was draped on Overmountain Shelter in North Carolina.

It's near the western terminus of the Overmountain Victory Trail where it meets the AT. This National Historic Trail follows a route Colonial patriots marched along for 170 miles to roust the British at King's Mountain.

For them, it wasn't just a walk in the woods.

It was a walk for freedom.
